The turtle of oman by naomi shihab nye5/24/2023 ![]() ![]() The relationship between Aref and his grandfather drives a lot of the story, and it’s very heartfelt. He spends some time resisting the idea of moving, but with Sidi’s guidance, he moves toward acceptance. There are adventures and high points, but a lot of the narrative is devoted to reflection and immersion in the rhythms of Aref’s environment. I think I sort of misread the blurb and thought it would chronicle the events that happened after Aref’s move, but in fact, the whole story takes place in Oman, while he’s preparing for the move to Michigan.įor the most part, this is a quiet story. This book wasn’t quite what I expected, but it surprised me in a good way. With Sidi’s help, however, he begins to see his journey in a new light. He loves it there, and he does not want to leave it behind to move to Michigan, a place so foreign and far away for him. ![]() ]My Summary: Aref’s home is Oman, where his house and cat and friends are, where his beloved grandfather, Sidi, lives. ![]() An elegant defence5/24/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() For all its astonishing complexity, however, the immune system can be easily compromised by fatigue, stress, toxins, advanced age, and poor nutrition-hallmarks of modern life-and even by excessive hygiene. Suddenly Miguel is fending off every single man on the planet to give Ezra room to get over Rico-while fighting a burning suspicion that the best thing to help Ezra get over his broken heart is Miguel. Miguel starts to notice that Ezra isn't just amazingly sweet-he’s achingly beautiful as well. But Ezra’s placid nature and sincere wonder at the simple life Miguel has taken for granted begin to soften Miguel’s hardened shell. When Miguel finds himself partially in charge of the befuddled, dreamy, healing Ezra, he’s pretty resentful at first. Miguel Rodriguez had great plans and ambition-but a hearty dose of real life crushed those flat. Ezra, confused, hurt, and lost, clings to Rico’s cousin and his boyfriend as the lifelines they are-but their friend Miguel is another story. Instead, Rico entrusts his family and friends with Ezra’s care. Rico has moved on, but he doesn’t just leave his ex high and dry. (It also includes the passages involving Fresca on the lavatory and the other excised early drafts.) The earliest known use of the word ‘moan’ to mean ‘grumble or complain’ is found in Eliot’s original drafts of The Waste Land.Ĥ. This volume revealed the evolution of the poem and Pound’s role in helping to knock it into shape. Much of this only came to light in 1971, when Eliot’s widow, Valerie, edited and published The Waste Land Facsimile. The early drafts of The Waste Land were subjected to the brutal but brilliant red pen of Eliot’s friend and fellow modernist poet, Ezra Pound, who cut the original draft of nearly 1,000 lines down to the 434 lines that make up the final version of the poem. Indeed, much of the eventual poem as it is now known and read was a result of Ezra Pound’s editing of the drafts. ![]() ![]() A whole early passage, which begins ‘First we had a couple of feelers down at Tom’s place’, describes a drunken conversation, while a passage describing a woman, Fresca, going to the toilet, also never made the final edit.ģ.
